Power optimization papers (High quality content)

Paper presentation on power optimization for electrical engineers!

SAMPLE 1: A method and system for conserving battery strength of a mobile node, such as a laptop computer, on a wireless local area network (WLAN). The mobile node transmit symbols, which are units of data, during transmission cycles to maintain a connection with the WLAN. A battery charge level of the mobile node is measured. As the battery charge level drops below pre-defined levels, a frequency of symbol transmission for the mobile node is reduced. The reduction of the frequency of the symbol transmission results in lower power demands by a transmitter chipset of the mobile node. Thus, the mobile node is able to prolong the life of the battery of the mobile node.

SAMPLE 2: A method and apparatus are disclosed for improving the efficiency of operation of AC induction motors. The method and apparatus utilizes a microprocessor to tune a motor control system such that the time interval between the turn-on of a bi-directional switch and the time of sensing the resultant inrush current through the stator is maintained substantially constant as the load is varied.

SAMPLE 3: An RF transceiver includes a low noise amplifier module, a blocking circuit, a down-conversion module, a processing module, an up-conversion module, and a power amplifier module. The low noise amplifier module amplifies inbound RF signals. The blocking circuit, when enabled, substantially attenuates a blocking signal and passes, substantially unattenuated, desired receive RF signals of the inbound RF signals. The down-conversion module converts the amplified inbound RF signals or the desired receive RF signals into inbound baseband or low IF signals. The processing module converts the inbound baseband or low IF signals into inbound data, converts outbound data into outbound baseband or low IF signals

Motor speed control

Fuzzy Logic Applied to Motor Control

Abstract-

Today, home appliance applications require more and more features such as motor speed adaptations to multipurpose accessories, user-friendly interfaces, and security features. Such new requirements can be achieved through a low-end microcontroller-based electronic control using the fuzzy logic approach. Now a days, most of fuzzy logic-based controls are only limited to a complicated ranking management of user interfaces, sensors, and actuators, corresponding to slow software speed operation. This paper proposes a totally different use of fuzzy logic. In this case, fuzzy logic is implemented in a standard micro controller to regulate the speed of a universal motor by a real time adjustment (every 30ms) of the motor current. This microcontroller directly tunes the motor current by means of a chopper converter. Starting from a basic food processor application, the paper practically shows how a fuzzy logic approach can be applied to build a closed speed regulation loop from a very low cost tacho-generator. Practical guidelines are successively given from the initial concept analysis phase, up to the final generation of the executable code to be loaded in the microcontroller. The paper also gives the practical procedure to define the input parameters and to build fuzzy logic rules when using the fuzzy logic development tool. Finally, the major benefits of this paper lie in an original approach where fuzzy logic is applied to fast “real-time” regulation loop without requiring any specific expertise in conventional methods of regulation.

What are Transistors
What is a SET
Operation of SETs
Application of SETs
How do  SETs differ from Conventional

A transistor is a solid state semiconductor device which can be used for numerous purposes including signal modulation, amplification, voltage stabilization, and many others.

Transistors act like a variable valve which, based on its input current (BJT) or input voltage (FET), allow a precise amount of current to flow through it from the circuit’s voltage supply.

Single electron transistor and artificial atoms

Single electron transistor
Abstract.
Modern techniques of lithography make it possible to confine electrons to sufficiently small dimensions that the quantization of both their charge and their energy are easily observable. When such confined electrons are allowed to tunnel to metallicle ads a single electron transistor (SET) is created. This transistor turns on and off again every time one electron is added to the isolated region. Whereas we can understand conventional transistors using classical concepts, the SET is quantum mechanical in an essential way. In fact, there is a close analogy between the confined electrons inside an SET and an atom. In this review, the physics underlying the operation of SETs is explained, a brief history of its invention is presented, and issues of current interest are discussed.

Bio-inspired Robotics

Introduction:

Our approach is characterized with a strong inclination for biological inspiration in which examples in nature — social insects in particular — are used as a way of designing strategies for controlling mobile robots. This approach has been successfully applied to the study of task, namely, Ant’s algorithms used in computer networks for routing data between Routers.
This phenomenon found in ants to derive the necessary behaviors for accomplishing this task. We study a species of ant known to possess this capability.

“bio-Computing” is a way “to understand how the relation of brain, body and environment produce behavior, to clarify the essential problems posed, and to devise and test hypotheses under realistic conditions” social insects were capable of successfully navigating and acting in the face of uncertain and unpredictable environments. It was reasoned that if a single robot required complex systems and techniques in order to perform in a reliable manner, then perhaps intelligent systems could be designed with many “simpler” robots using a minimalist approach to sensing and actuation; where group behavior is an emergent property and control is decentralized. Could system reliability be achieved by trading complexity for redundancy coupled with ”randomness” used to explore possible solution paths, which are often traits found in social insect colonies? May be, biology can teach us a thing or two about engineering swarms of simple interacting robots, and the theoretical foundations developed to model and explain these behaviors found in insect colonies can be used to underpin a more rigorous approach to collective robot design. Nature has already demonstrated the feasibility of this approach by way of the social insects.

TIDAL POWER THE FUTURE WAVE OF POWER GENERATION

ABSTRACT

Renewable energy can be used to decrease global dependence on natural resources, and tidal power can be the primary form of renewable power utilized. Built upon steam turbine knowledge, tidal turbines draw on innovative technology and design to operate on both the inflow and outflow of water through them. Two case studies, Annapolis Royal and La Rance, prove that tidal power plants are capable of producing reliable and efficient power. Problems, such as initial cost and power transportation hinder future implementation of tidal power plants. This paper emphasizes the possibilities of utilizing the power of the oceans by pollution free, tidal Power generation. Tidal power utilizes twice the daily variation in sea level caused primarily by the gravitational effect of the Moon and, to a lesser extent by the Sun on the world's oceans. The Earth's rotation is also a factor in the production of tides.

Computer chips of today are synchronous. They contain a main clock, which controls the timing of the entire chips. There are problems, however, involved with these clocked designs that are common today. One problem is speed. A chip can only work as fast as its slowest component. Therefore, if one part of the chip is especially slow, the other parts of the chip are forced to sit idle. This wasted computed time is obviously detrimental to the speed of the chip.

New problems with speeding up a clocked chip are just around the corner. Clock frequencies are getting so fast that signals can barely cross the chip in one clock cycle. When we get to the point where the clock cannot drive the entire chip, we’ll be forced to come up with a solution. One possible solution is a second clock, but this will incur overhead and power consumption, so this is a poor solution. It is also important to note that doubling the frequency of the clock does not double the chip speed, therefore blindly trying to increase chip speed by increasing frequency without considering other options is foolish.

DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING SMART BIOMETRIC SOLUTIONS

ABSTRACT

Biometrics is the science of measuring and statistically analyzing biological data. In information technology, biometrics refers to the use of a person’s biological characteristics for personal identification and authentication. Fingerprint, iris-scan, retinal-scan, voiceprint, signature, handprint and facial features are some of the most common types of human biometrics.

Digital signal processors (DSPs), which are specially designed single-chip digital microcomputers that process electrical signals generated by electronic sensors (e.g., cameras, fingerprint sensors, microphones, etc.), will help to revolutionize this world of biometrics. The core of the biometric authentication process is made up of image processing and pattern matching or minutiae comparison algorithms. And the programmable DSP, with an architecture well-suited for implementing complex mathematical algorithms, can efficiently address all the processing needs of such a system.

The following information introduces the concept of a complete biometrics system solution based on semiconductor components, development tools, and software solutions. Additionally, the various concepts that outline the inherent advantages of a DSP in a biometric system - better accuracy, faster recognition and lower cost, all leading to
smarter biometrics - will also be covered.
