MYRINET

Abstract:

Myrinet, ANSI/VITA 26-1998, is a high-speed local area networking system designed by Myricom to be used as an inter connect between multiple machines to form computer clusters. Myrinet has much less protocol overhead than standards such as Ethernet, and therefore provides better throughput, less interference, and lower latency while using the host CPU. Although it can be used as a traditional networking system, Myrinet is often used directly by programs that "know" about it, thereby bypassing a call into the operating system.

GPRS DRIVING WAP ON THE ROAD TO 3G

ABSRTACT
Mobile telephony allowed us to talk on the move. The Internet turned raw data into helpful services that people found easy to use. Now, these two technologies are converging to create third generation mobile services. In simple terms, third generation (3G) services combine high-speed mobile access with Internet Protocol (IP)-based services. But this doesn’t just mean fast mobile connection to the world wide web. Rather, it means whole new ways to communicate, access information, conduct business, learn, and be entertained -- liberated from slow, cumbersome equipment and immovable points of access. Mobile computing is being heralded as the new “killer app” for the Internet.
While 3G hasn’t arrived yet 2.5G is here! The technologies at the forefront of 2.5G push are GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution.), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol).

On the road to 3G, we shall have an insight into the blossoming of 3G from 2G, the technologies involved, & their areas of application.. GRPS and WAP are definite stepping-stones on 3G wireless networks. Separately their improvements are useful upgrades and together they are a significant departure from 2G systems. A gradual transition and user acceptance for 3G could be a reality.

DIGITAL JEWELLERY MADE POSSIBLE USING WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS

Mobile computing ppt (paper presentation applications)
ABSTRACT

Mobile computing is beginning to break the chains that tie us to our desks, but many of today's mobile devices can still be a bit awkward to carry around. In the next age of computing, there will be an explosion of computer parts across our bodies, rather than across our desktops. Basically, jewellery adorns the body, and has very little practical purpose. The combination of microcomputer devices and increasing computer power has allowed several companies to begin producing fashion jewellery with embedded intelligence i.e., Digital jewelry. Digital jewellery can best be defined as wireless, wearable computers that allow you to communicate by ways of e-mail, voicemail, and voice communication. This paper enlightens on how various computerized jewelry (like ear-rings, necklace, ring, bracelet, etc.,) will work with mobile embedded intelligence.

Even the devices we use are protected by passwords. It can be frustrating trying to keep with all of the passwords and keys needed to access any door or computer program. This paper discusses about a new Java-based, computerized ring that will automatically unlock doors and log on to computers.

MULTIMEDIA MESSAGING SERVICES

ABSTRACT

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) adds images, text, audio clips and ultimately, video clips to SMS (Short Message Service / text messaging). Simon Buckingham, CEO of Mobile Streams believes that: 'The transition from Short Message Service (SMS) to Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is as important on mobile phones as the transition from DOS to Windows was for the PC. It represents a revolution.' Unlike other technologies like WAP, Bluetooth etc - MMS offers a complete development and billing environment along with a chance to create compelling applications. Thus, MMS provides an opportunity to foster an industry where all players in the value chain may get an opportunity to earn revenue.

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a messaging service for the mobile environment that has been standardised by the WAP forum and 3GPP. To the end user, MMS is very similar to the short message service: it provides automatic and immediate delivery of user-created content. The addressing used is the phone-number of the recipient and the bulk of the MMS traffic goes from phone to phone. MMS also provides support for e-mail addressing. Hence, messages can also be sent from phone to e-mail and back. In addition to content type used for SMS text , MMS messages can contain still Images, voice or audio clip, and presentation information. A multimedia message is a multimedia presentation created by the sender using, for example predefined templates alternatively the content can be obtained ready made from a third-party content provider. The message can be delivered using to a push to the recipient’s phone and the recipient is notified only after the whole message has been received. MMS transport is carried out using WAP protocols and any bearer capable of supporting WAP can be used. Therefore MMS is bearer independent, i.e, MMS is not only limited to only GSM or WCDMA. the wireless session protocol(WSP) specified in the WAP forum, is used for message transport from phone to MMSC and from MMSC to phone. in addition WAP push features are used to deliver the message from the serverto the recipient. MMS uses WAP protocols, but is a separatephone application, independent from the browser. As the MMS concept is built upon SMS the target of service is to bring a new facility to the mass market of MMS users.

4G – MOBILE COMMUNICATION

ABSTRACT

With the rapid development of communication networks, it is expected that fourth generation mobile systems will be launched within decades. Fourth generation (4G) mobile systems focus on seamlessly integrating the existing wireless technologies including GSM, wireless LAN, and Bluetooth. This contrasts with third generation (3G), which merely focuses on developing new standards and hardware. 4G systems will support comprehensive and personalized services providing stable system performance and quality service. This paper gives the details about the need for mobile communication and its development in various generations. In addition, the details about the working of 4G mobile communication were given. Finally, it narrates how 4G mobile communication will bring a new level of connectivity and convenience in communication.

Mobile fraud detection: paper presentation

MOBILE FRAUD DETECTION

Abstract

This paper discusses the status of research on detection of fraud undertaken in mobile system.
A first task has been the identification of possible fraud scenarios and of typical fraud indicators, which can be mapped to data in toll tickets. Currently, this project is exploring the detection of fraudulent behaviour based on a combination of absolute and differential usage. Three approaches are being investigated: a rule-based approach, and two approaches based on neural networks, where both supervised and unsupervised learning are considered. Special attention is being paid to the feasibility of the implementations.

Paper presentation on CDMA

This is a sample of the main paper: Code Division Spread Spectrum is one form of CDMA communication technique optimized for the cost conscious, high volume and short cycle consumer electronics market. Its primary application is in digital cordless telephony today. Meanwhile, it is being applied to wireless devices for the last 100-meter connection to the Internet, and in the wireless local loop to provide sub-$20 handset cost, tariff free mobile voice services in some third world countries.
Why is CD/SS technology suitable for consumer electronics? And how does it compare to other long-range
wireless transmission techniques such as DSS, DECT and Wide band CDMA? The next 10 slides will

CDMA technology: Paper presentation

Sample of the main paper: There has been a tremendous growth in wireless communication technology over the past decade. The significant increase in subscribers and traffic, new bandwidth consuming applications such as gaming, music down loading and video streaming will place new demands on capacity. The answer to the capacity demand is the provision of new spectrum and the development of a new technology – Wideband CDMA. WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is by far the most widely adopted 3G air-interface technology in the new IMT- 2000 frequency bands. Standardized by 3GPP and ITU, WCDMA has gained broad acceptance within the wireless communication industry. WCDMA was designed to provide cost-efficient capacity for both modern mobile multimedia applications and traditional mobile voice services. One of the key benefits of the technology is efficient, flexible support for radio bearers, in which network capacity can be freely allocated between voice and data within the same carrier. WCDMA also supports both multiple simultaneous services and multimedia services comprising multiple components with different service quality requirements in terms of throughput, transfer delay, and bit error rate. In WCDMA, user data is spread over a bandwidth of circa 5 MHz. The
wide bandwidth supports high user data rates and also provides performance benefits due to frequency diversity. The wideband carrier is also cost-effective as more users can be served by means of a single transceiver.

Paper presentations, engineering paper presentations

Are you tired of slow modem connections? Cellonics Incorporated has developed new technology that may end this and other communications problems forever. The new modulation and demodulation technology is called Cellonics. In general, this technology will allow for modem speeds that are 1,000 times faster than our present modems. The development is based on the way biological cells communicate with each other and nonlinear dynamical systems (NDS). Major telcos, which are telecommunications companies, will benefit from the incredible speed, simplicity, and robustness of this new technology, as well as individual users. Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) are used to deliver high-rate digital data over existing ordinary phone-lines. A new modulation technology called Discrete Multitone (DMT) allows the transmission of high speed data. DSL facilitates the  imultaneous use of normal telephone services, ISDN, and high speed data transmission, e.g., video. DMT-based DSL can be seen as the transition from existing copper-lines to the future fiber-cables. This makes DSL
economically interesting for the local telephone companies. They can offer customers high speed data services even before switching to fiber-optics.

Paper presentation on IP security

IP SECURITY

INTRODUCTION

In today's massively interconnected business world of the Internet, intranets, branch offices, and remote access, sensitive information constantly crosses the networks. The challenge for network administrators and other IS professionals is to ensure that this traffic is:

• Safe from data modification while enroute.
• Safe from interception, viewing, or copying.
• Safe from being accessed by unauthenticated parties.

These issues are known as data integrity, confidentiality, and authentication. In addition, replay protection prevents acceptance of a resent packet.
Designed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for the Internet Protocol, IPSec supports network-level authentication, data integrity, and encryption. IPSec integrates with the inherent security of the IP datagram to provide the ideal platform for safeguarding intranet and Internet communications.

Because IP Security is deployed below the transport level, network managers (and software vendors) are spared the trouble and expense of trying to deploy and coordinate security one application at a time. The IPSec framework does not specify exactly which encryption algorithms must be used by its implementations. Instead, it provides an empty infrastructure where the desired algorithms may be set. This actually is a smart design decision, because it allows the implementations to be modular, customizable for specific problems and easily up gradable with new algorithms. A standard set of default algorithms is specified by the IETF in order to foster the early adoption of IPSec

IP security refers to security mechanism implemented at the IP (Internet Protocol) Layer to ensure integrity, authentication and confidentiality of data during transmission in the open Internet environment. The primary objective of recent work in this area is to improve robustness of the security mechanism at IP layer for users who request security.

TELECOMM NETWORK MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

ISSUES IN TELECOMM NETWORK MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Introduction

Intelligent agents have become fashionable again in the late nineties, not only within the artificial intelligence community and in the popular press but also in traditional computer science communities. Whereas current commercial solutions for distributed processing are mostly centered on the client-server concept, with remote procedure calls as the standard way of interaction, script languages have emerged that explicitly support agent-oriented programming. Especially in telecommunication applications, where the instant provision of new services and the customization of existing services become critical issues, agents will become to an increasing degree an essential aspect in the design of new networks to handle the ever-increasing complexity.

This paper will focus on the “mobility” attribute of intelligent agents and thus uses the term mobile agent to denote an autonomous mobile object to which a user delegates some or all of her decision-making in the respective problem domain, and that is able to move around an electronic network, communicating with other such active objects by means of message passing. First the evolution of TNMS is described followed by the roles of manager and agent. The next section discusses the security issues of the agent-based systems followed by problems and possible attacks in such systems. These sections also discuss the possible solutions offered and the loopholes existing in these techniques leading to a conclusion that it won’t be a wise step to fully open Telecommunications networks for agents at this point.

FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATIONS

Introduction:
our current "age of technology" is the result of many brilliant inventions and discoveries, but it is our ability to transmit information, and the media we use to do it, that is perhaps most responsible for its evolution . Progressing from the copper wire of a century ago to today's fiber optic cable, our increasing ability to transmit more information, more quickly and over longer distances has expanded the boundaries of our technological development in all areas.
Today's low-loss glass fiber optic cable offers almost unlimited bandwidth and unique advantages over all previously developed transmission media. The basic point-to-point fiber optic transmission system consists of three basic elements: the optical transmitter, the fiber optic cable and the optical receiver.

Optical fiber communication

Paper presentation:  OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATION

ABSTRACT

Communication is an important part of our daily life. The communication process involves information generation, transmission, reception and interpretation. As needs for various types of communication such as voice, images, video and data communications increase demands for large transmission capacity also increase. This need for large capacity has driven the rapid development light wave technology; a worldwide industry has developed. An optical or light wave communication system is a system that uses light waves as the carrier for transmission. An optical communication system mainly involves three parts. Transmitter, receiver and channel. In optical communication transmitters are light sources, receivers are light detectors and the channels are optical fibers. In optical communication the channel i.e, optical fibers plays an important role because it carries the data from transmitter to the receiver. Hence, here we shall discuss mainly about optical fibers.
